The Role

We see this as a really exciting position to creatively explore innovation and possibility in membership with key input into our strategy from the start-up phase. Our members are a movement - people who will participate in ecological restoration and together make ecological citizenship the norm!

We need someone who can pick up the threads from new member acquisition, and make individual members feel like a community - wherever they are in the world. Someone who can create a plan that makes sure members are motivated to keep learning, to keep putting what they have learned into practice, and keep paying it forward and supporting other members in the community for years to come.

The Membership Manager role is a new position, responsible for developing, shaping and implementing an innovative membership strategy and model, working with the core team. While this is an initial 6 month contract, we envisage this person becoming a part of the team and encourage applications from someone who would be interested in becoming a salaried staff member carrying forward our membership management beyond launch.

The initial position is for 3 days per week, with potential for taking on more days closer to launch (autumn), or being supported by an additional part-time staff member. Ideally we are looking for an individual who will stay on as part of the team long-term and be a part of shaping the role.

Initiative Earth is an equal opportunities employer, dedicated to creating teams of individuals with diverse experiences and knowledge. As an organisation we work on a trust and purpose driven basis, committed to a self-management ecologically-minded framework and supportive working practises.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Leading on the design of a meaningful, engaging, action and community-led membership offer to a wide-ranging global audience, working with the core team and the Educational Programmes Manager to ensure long term, meaningful engagement and the development of a supportive online community.

  • Leading on the review, expansion and stress-testing of our membership model and forecasting in its current form, working in collaboration with the core team, and the Head of Strategic Fundraising.

  • Leading on the development and implementation of a cohesive membership acquisition strategy, including identification of key partners and creatively working with organisational ambassadors and stakeholders.

  • Lead on the member engagement strategy, working with the core team, platform developers and branding partners to ensure the belonging, movement-building and activation of a diverse cohort of global members.

  • Leading on the prototype communications for the soft launch of the platform with regards to members and membership.

  • Working with the Governance and Finance Lead to establish and implement suitable fundraising and donor management systems in relation to membership and organisational needs, as well as GDPR and data protection best practice, and support the implementation of these systems.

  • Working with the core team and tech development partners to research, shape and implement decisions regarding the techstack for membership engagement and experience.

  • Working with the Governance and Finance Lead, Treasurer and Directors to ensure our membership model adheres to charity and non-profit legal structures and guidelines, and that we are optimising a core income stream potential in the most effective and financially viable way possible.

  • Leading on the digital analysis and strategic planning and implementation around membership metrics, monitoring and reporting on these.

  • Creating quantitative metrics around CPA, benchmarking for impact measurement and communications effectiveness, tracking of audiences and engagement and setting up longer term systems for tracking.

  • Setting up any other appropriate systems and processes with a clear plan for the continuation of the role of membership manager, whether this is you or another individual.

About you

  • Strong experience in marketing, experience membership, or subscription-based marketing would be ideal.

  • Familiar with integrated B2C tech stacks, particularly with regards to membership and or customer building success.

  • Ability to understand, develop and implement effective digital analysis strategies, and creatively monitor and shape engagement and retention metrics.

  • Knowledge of membership structures at a strategic and governance level for charities or non-profit organisations.

  • Experience designing and implementing meaningful membership or subscriber strategies for engagement, retainment and expansion, including communications and content strategy.

  • Commitment to the Initiative Earth mission and vision and values of grassroots, bottom-up community action in response to the current climate crisis, and the importance and community-led ecosystems restoration and agroecology.

  • Understanding of the importance of accessibility, decolonised learning, wide-net and hard to reach engagement in the mission and vision of the organisation and in the context of membership.

  • An organised, proactive and creative thinker who thrives on building and maintaining meaningful relationships.

  • Able to work with a small and dynamic team and confident to contribute creatively and to strategy, taking an adaptable and solutions-lead approach.

  • Experience working in a start-up environment would be desirable.

More on Initiative Earth

Initiative Earth is a newly formed Charity using technology, storytelling and skill-sharing to enable people to restore ecosystems and revitalise communities around the world.

We are focused on the development of a platform of high quality online courses in ecosystem restoration and regenerative agriculture; the expansion of our public-facing EcoResolution campaign and the development of our global ChangeMaker Network.

Our first campaign, EcoResolution, was set up in 2018 with Cara Delevingne in response to the powerlessness people feel in the face of ecological breakdown and political inaction. This social media campaign has now expanded into a global initiative that combines the power of technology and storytelling, aiming to empower individuals to take decisive action in the face of environmental and social justice issues.

Based on the experience and insight gathered through EcoResolution and our change-makers worldwide, we established the charity Initiative Earth in 2020. Our aim is to make accessible high-quality courses that enable practical and 'on-the-ground' ecosystem restoration, turning ideas and understanding into action and impact.

Our experience spans the fields of alternative education, technology, systems change and environmental regeneration. Our extensive networks and knowledge place us in a unique position to access diverse groups and communities across the worlds of grassroots movements, farming, business, culture, entertainment and more.

Initiative Earth is an equal opportunities employer, dedicated to creating teams of individuals with diverse experiences and knowledge. As an organisation we work on a trust and purpose driven basis, committed to a self-management ecologically-minded framework and supportive working practices.
